Abstract
1471825 Matrix displays NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO Ltd 28 April 1975 [2 May 1974] 17562/75 Heading G5C An electrogenerated chemiluminescent (EGCL) display device includes a photoconductive device 12 in one lead which is turned on by a pulse of suitable characteristics and is subsequently maintained on by light emitted by the EGCL material 10. In a figure of eight display device, a layer 30 of EGCL material extends over segment electrodes 27 surrounded by a common electrode 28. The device includes FET's comprising gates 21, sources 24 and drains 25, transparent layers 22, 26 of Al 2 O 3 and a photoconductive layer 23 of CdS or CdSe. Energizing pulses to selected gates renders them conductive, causing pulses to be applied to segments of the layer 23 which become conducting. Segments are turned off by a pulse of opposite sign or by using another device to by-pass current to the EGCL material. The segments may be arranged in a matrix with two semi-conductor elements in series to perform an AND function, the semi-conductor elements being connected to row and column conductors respectively. A further pair of semiconductor elements may be used to turn a segment off; in this arrangement the substrate includes four effective layers. The semiconductors may be replaced by pairs of photoresistors each sensitive to light of a particular wavelength. X and Y conductive arrays between further similar photoresistive material can be used to sense the displayed pattern by scanning. The EGCL material comprises a phosphor, a solvent and an electrolyte, the application of a potential produces a redose reaction with light emission.
