Abstract
1471530 Discharge apparatus MEDION Ltd 12 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 33557/73 Heading H1D Apparatus for ionizing air by means of a corona discharge comprises a high voltage generator 30 and a discharge means, e.g. in the form of a needle 31, Fig. 3, in a metal-walled chamber 32 with an inlet 39 and an outlet 40, and a fan or blower 41 to provide an air flow. The ratio of the times taken to reach a chamber in the direction of air flow and at right angles thereto is greater than unity, and the air velocity is such that a substantial part of ionized molecules leaving the vicinity of the discharge are blown through the outlet more quickly than they can reach any wall of the chamber 32. The apparatus is situated in a room with walls 33. Chamber 32 has walls of steel plate, or thin steel or aluminium sheet or foil attached to a light frame. If the air flow reaches a value determined by the mathematical formula given, most of the ions generated are removed from the chamber 32 before striking the walls thereof. The outlet 40 may be covered by a metal grill. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). the discharge means comprises a wire (42) extending between the sides of the chamber (32) but insulated therefrom, and the air passing the wire is deflected by a curved earthed metallic electrode (46) to pass out through an outlet (44) in the top of the chamber (32).
