Abstract

1471456 Graft polymer lens ESSILOR INTERNATIONAL 31 July 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 33811/74 Heading C3G A contact lens comprises a shaped, crosslinked graft polymer of silicone and poly-(vinyl pyrrolidone) and water in an amount sufficient to impart optical transparency to the lens. The silicone used in the examples is a mixture of a dimethylpolysiloxanic oil blocked at each end by a unit of formula a copolymer of units of formula (CH 3 ) 3 SiO 0À5 , H 2 C=CH-(CH 3 )SiO and SiO 2 and a copolymer of units of formula (CH 3 ) 2 HSiO 0À5 and SiO 2 . The silicone is subjected to moulding and curing, irradiated in an oxidizing medium, contacted with a grafting medium comprising N-vinyl pyrrolidone and, optionally, poly-(vinyl pyrrolidone), to form a graft polymer and the graft polymer is cross-linked, after swelling in water, by application of, e.g. U.V. radiation.
