Abstract
1470722 Smelting Zn in a blast furnace ISC SMELTING Ltd 1 March 1976 [2 May 1975] 18591/75 Heading C7D Zinc is smelted in a blast furnace by introducing oxidic zinciferous lump material and coke at the top of the furnace, a pre-heated blast of air or oxygen enriched air at the bottom of the furnace, condensing zinc vapour from the gas leaving an offtake near the furnace top to leave a low calorific value condenser gas containing CO and injecting part or all of this CO into the pre-heated blast. The CO content of the condenser gas may be separated from the other gaseous constituents of the condenser gas prior to injection or the condenser gas may be injected directly into the blast in the furnace tuyere region after removal of entrained solids using water scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators and optionally preheating e.g. 10% to 20% by volume of the condenser gas may be injected into the pre-heated blast which may be at a temperature of 1100‹C to 1150‹C for an air blast which is not 02 enriched or 800-850‹C for an air blast comprising 37% O 2 .
