Abstract

1470019 Counterbalancing jib cranes AMERICAN HOIST & DERRICK CO 15 April 1975 [3 May 1974] 15468/75 Heading B8B A crane comprises a pedestal 12, shown mounted on the sea floor 14, (though it could be mounted on a floating barge), a machinery deck 16 rotatably mounted on the pedestal 12 and pivotally carrying a boom 18 and a mast 22, both in a forward position. The boom 18 has a load line 50 and is luffed by a line 48. A counterweight 24 in the form of a tank 26 filled with seawater 28 is pivotally mounted on the deck 12 at a rearward position 30 and has rollers (78), Fig. 2 (not shown), arranged to engage a counterweight support collar 72 integrally supported on the pedestal 12. A suspension 42 is connected between the counterweight at 43 and the mast at 41. When hook 52 is not loaded the tension in the suspension 42 is a minimum, the counterweight 24 bearing on the collar 72. As the load is increased to the point where the counterweight 24 tends to pivot upwards about the position 30 and the rollers (78) tend to leave the collar 72 shims (90), Fig. 3 (not shown), act between the counterweight 24 and the deck 16, additional counterbalancing being obtained by the flexing of the rearward portion of the deck 16.
