Abstract

1469825 Grafting an ethylene copolymer with styrene BASF AG 16 Aug 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 36139/74 Heading C3G A mixture of polystyrene and a graft polymer is produced by allowing shaped articles of a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate or an acrylate or methacrylate ester to be swollen by styrene in aqueous suspension and polymerizing the styrene at from 60‹ to 110‹ C. in the presence of a free-radical initiator, the ethylene copolymer having a comonomer content of from 3 to 40% by weight and a melt index (190‹ C./2À16 kg.) of from 0À1 to 50 g./10 min. and from 100 to 400 parts by weight of styrene being used per 100 parts of copolymer, the proportion of styrene units in the mixture being more than 50% by weight but not more than 80% by weight. Examples are given in which ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer granules are grafted.
