Abstract

1469533 Tensioning webs NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973 22 March 1974] 44593/73 and 12860/74 Heading B8R [Also in Division D1] A device for tensioning a web comprises a tube 1 open at both ends and formed with an expanded section 3 into which opens a branch passage 4, a cylindrical unexpanded section 2 having flared sections at both ends, the sum of the lengths of the flared sections being less than the length of the section 2 and the bore of the branch passage 4 being greater than that of section 2. The passage 4 is connected to an air pump for maintaining a pressure differential between the section 3 and the exterior to cause an air flow along the tube which exerts a drag on the web drawn through it. The pump may create a positive pressure differential in which case slack can be taken up as a loop upstream of the tube. In this case also a guide tube 6 is provided. Alternatively the pump may create a negative pressure differential and slack is taken up as a loop drawn into the mouth of branch passage 4. In the Fig. 3 embodiment slack is taken up as a loop 29. The tube may be of rectangular section to accommodate the web. A pressure-sensitive device in the expanded seetion gives a signal in the event of excessive air pressure indicative of web breakage.
