Abstract

1469340 Removal of sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides from gases; sulphur EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 6 May 1974 19817/74 Heading C1A Sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides are removed from a gas stream by a process which comprises (a) contacting said gas stream in a scrubbing zone with an aqueous solution containing ammonium thiosulphate with ammonium sulphite and/or ammonium hydroxide, (b) withdrawing said gas stream, (c) withdrawing the aqueous scrubber effluent, (d) reacting at least a portion of said scrubber effluent solution with hydrogen sulphide in an aqueous liquid phase at a pH of at least 4.5 in a reaction zone to produce elemental sulphur, (e) separating said sulphur and (f) returning at least a portion of said aqueous phase to said scrubbing zone. Another portion of effluent (c) may be reacted with ammonia and H 2 S or S to prepare fresh scrubber solution for recycle. The temperature in the reaction zone may be such as to obtain the S in liquid form.
