Abstract

1469015 Gas cooled nuclear reactors COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 3 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 42954/74 Heading G6C A gas-cooled, high temperature, nuclear reactor comprises a plurality of graphite rods 1, Fig. 1, containing the nuclear fuel and provided with passages 2 for the passage of the coolant gas, and a corresponding number of graphite reflectors 4 and 9 formed with passages 6, 7 and 8 for the passage of the coolant gas and containing stacks of beads, balls or cylinders 11 of adsorbent material for trapping solid fission products entrained in the coolant gas. The adsorbent material comprises silica or carbonaceous material with an optional coating of graphite. The nuclear fuel, which comprises particles of uranium and/or thorium oxide or carbide, coated with pyrocarbon or silicon carbide is contained in closed cavities (not shown) in the graphite rods, or, alternatively, it is dispersed throughout the rods. A central graphite block 1 is provided with bores (not shown) in which control and shut down elements are intended to be placed.
