Abstract

1468907 Strut-type suspensions SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 17 May 1974 [19 May 1973] 22064/74 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] The connection of a strut-type suspension unit (telescopic damper and coil spring) to the vehicle body is via a triple race rolling bearing and a resilient member 15. The bearing is required to have two annular series of rolling elements (balls or rollers), the resilient member is required to be connected between the race ring 3 carrying two raceways and a support ring 17 for attachment to the vehicle body, and means 22 are required to be provided for adjusting the bearing clearance. The race rings 1 and 2 are formed with sleeve portions 11 and 10, and a lip 12 on the portion 10 snaps into a groove 13 on the portion 11, so that the bearing and the resilient member 15 form a self-contained unit before assembly on the piston-rod 7 of the damper. The resilient member 15 is formed with a lip 16 to seal the race rings 1 and 3. The lower series of balls is provided with a sealing ring 18 having sealing lips 19 and webs 20 which extend between the balls to provide circumferential stress. The upper series has separators 21 of resilient plastics material. The embodiments of Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) also have angular contact ball bearings, but, in contrast to Fig. 1 the points of intersection with the principal axis of the lines connecting the points of contact of the balls are widely spaced. In Fig. 2, the middle race ring is U-shaped in crosssection, and the lower series of balls is in a cage (38). In Fig. 3, the middle race ring is L-shaped in cross-section. In Fig. 4 (not shown) axial thrust rollers are combined with offset angular contact balls, and Fig. 5 (not shown) has two rows of superposed needle rollers.
