Abstract
1467766 Laminates LUBRIZOL CORP 1 April 1975 [3 April 1974] 13338/75 Heading B5N A curable article comprises a cellular core 11 and at least one substantially non-porous facing member 12 adhered thereto, said reinforcing member comprising (I) a reinforcing material 13 impregnated with (II) a composition which is substantially non-volatile, solid and substantially storage stable within a first temperature range which embraces ambient and normal storage temperatures; liquid, homogeneous, substantially non-reactive and capable of wetting or saturating the reinforcing material and thereafter remaining liquid within a second temperature range which is higher than the first temperature range and which embraces or overlaps a temperature range from about 90 to 135 C.; readily and reversibly convertible from the solid to the liquid state by varying the temperature between the first and second ranges; capable of being chemically converted to an infusible state within a third temperature range which is higher than the second temperature range, but liquid until so converted, said composition comprising (A) at least one component which is capable of chemical conversion to an infusible state by reaction with at least one other component; and (B) a component or combination of components capable of reaction with component (A) to cause said chemical conversion. The core may be a honeycomb, e.g. of paper, plastics material, cardboard, pasteboard, aluminium or steels, the material of the core being optionally resin impregnated and the cells thereof being optionally filled with expanded resin; alternatively, the core may be a foamed material, e.g. a polyurethane, polystyrene or urea-formaldehyde foam. The reinforcing material is typically fibrous and may comprise asbestos fibres, random glass fibres, glass fibre matting or glass rovings. The impregnating composition may comprise an unsaturated polyester derived from a polyhydroxy compound, e.g. ethylene, propylene, diethylene, a dipropylene glycol or glycerol, an unsaturated acid, e.g. maleic, fumaric, itaconic or citraconic acid and optionally phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, succinic or adipic acid and a monomer reactive therewith under free radical conditions, e.g. an N-oxohydrocarbon-substituted acrylamide or methacrylamide, an N-hydrocarbonsubstituted acrylamide or methacrylamide, allyl urea or N-vinyl succinimide; alternatively, component A may be a substance yielding a polyisocyanate at elevated temperatures, e.g. a bis-(N,N-diphenyl urea) of the formula where R is a divalent radical or a diaminimide of the formula where R is as defined above and R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical and component B a polyol or polyamine. The composition may also comprise fillers, polymerization initiators, inhibitors, pigments and plasticizers.
