Abstract

1467630 Tea manufacture F A HOPPER 15 July 1974 [16 July 1973] 33850/73 Heading A2B Tea is dried in apparatus comprising an enclosed treatment zone through which the leaf is moved, means for introducing the leaf into the upstream end of the zone, means for passing steam through the leaf while the leaf is passing through the zone, means for removing the leaf from the downstream end of the zone, means for condensing the steam which leaves the zone and means for separating essential oils from the condensed steam. As shown (Fig. 1) the apparatus comprises a endless conveyor 1 comprising two identical chains 2 spaced apart in parallel relationship and passing round sprockets 3 and 4, at least one of which is driven. Perforated rectangular trays 7 are secured to the chain links. The conveyor is disposed in a closed chamber 8. Tea leaf is fed from hopper 21 into the trays, the base of the hopper being formed as a vapour lock 22. The level of the leaf in the trays is controlled by spreaders 26 and vapour baffles 11 are provided at each end of the chamber to prevent loss of vapour as the trays enter and leave the chamber. The chamber 8 tapers to form a vapour collecting zone 12 which leads to a condenser 13 cooled by air. The condensed vapours pass via a pipe 16 to a funnel 20. A steam chamber 10 is provided below that part of the conveyor 1 which is in the chamber 8: steam is blown from pipes 24 through the leaf in the trays 7 and the volatiles are collected in the condenser, fermentation in the leaf being arrested at the same time. The endless chain conveyor may be replaced by a straight tubular housing in which is mounted a screw conveyor. The arresting of the fermentation results in rapid drying without risk of over-firing.
