Abstract

1467531 Reciprocating pumps; reciprocating piston compressors; IC engine main driving gear; oscillating pistons C R PUZEY EDD COCHRANE and J W TURNER 2 Jan 1975 [28 Jan 1974] 129/75 Headings F1A F1B and FIN [Also in Division F2] A crank linkage mechanism for converting combined reciprocating and oscillatory motion of a piston 12 about one axis into rotary motion of a flywheel 14 about another axis, and vice-versa, comprises a ball-ended arm 18 connected fast at 28 to the piston 12 to project at right-angles therefrom and having its ball-end 19 seated in a bearing unit 20 slidably reciprocably mounted in an axial bore 21 in the flywheel 14. Lubricant is fed, via ducts 25, to the slidable bearing unit 20 and the seating of the ball-end 12 therein. Alternative sliding bearing units 20 for mounting the ballend 19 of the arm 18 in plain (22) or ball races (30, 32) are illustrated in Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown). The mechanism can be used in a twin-cylinder two or four stroke cycle I.C. engine having the common piston 12 driving through the flywheel 14 to an output shaft 15, which arrangement could alternatively form a pump or compressor with the shaft 15 forming the input.
