1467479 Headboxes ST ANNE'S BOARD MILL CO Ltd 25 July 1974 32846/74 Heading D2A A headbox for a cylinder mould machine is equipped with an explosion chamber 14 defined by a housing 16 of rectangular cross-section, a baffle, e.g. a planar plate 2 as shown or a U-shaped wall (32) as in Fig. 2 (not shown) to define a path for stock, flowing through the chamber 14 from inlet pipes 36, 38 to exit slice 28, having a plurality of right-angle bends to cause turbulence in the stock, and a slice lip 59 extending downstream from the slice 28 to define a pressurised forming region 64 with the surface of the cylinder mould 12. The position of the headbox as a whole may be adjustable and the slice lip 59 is preferably pivotally mounted by shaft 68 so that by turning a wheel 104 driving a worm 100 and worm gear 98 coupled to shaft 94 and transversely spaced cranks 90 the position of the slice lip 59 as a whole relative to the cylinder mould can be adjusted. A series of transversely spaced turnbuckles 80, 82, 88 allows adjustment of the contour of the slice lip 59 in the cross-machine direction. The position of a bar 73 may be adjusted to vary the effective opening of the slice 28. In a modification (Fig. 2-not shown) the lip 59 is extended downstream in cantilever fashion so that its trailing edge 66 can flex to maintain a desired predetermined pressure in the forming region 64.
