Abstract

1466885 Boring earth; sand drains BOS KALIS WESTMINSTER GROUP NV 14 June 1974 [15 June 1973] 26586/74 Heading E1F A method of making a hole and filling it with material, e.g. to form a sand drain, includes the steps of drilling a hole 8 using a continuous flight auger 7 and then reversing the direction of rotation of the auger 7 to fill the hole 8 with sand, the auger 7 being gradually moved upwardly as the hole is filled. As described the auger 7 is driven by a motor 5 and is moved vertically along a guide 3 by a hoisting cable 6. A hopper 9 guides the sand into the hole 8. During drilling the auger 7 is rotated at a relatively high speed e.g. above 300 r.p.m. so that soil is discharged upwardly from the hole. In a modification (not shown) the auger 7 is provided with a hollow shaft and the end of the auger is formed as a jetting nozzle. The smearing layer formed on the walls of the hole 8 may be broken by cutters 15 mounted on a cutter head 14 (Fig. 4) carried by the end of the auger 7. During drilling the cutters 15 are retracted (as shown to the right of Fig. 4) and during the filling of the hole the cutters 15 are extended (as shown to the left of Fig. 4) to cut helical grooves in the wall of the hole as the auger is raised.
