Abstract
1466697 Cathode materials COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE and AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 28 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 03836/74 Heading H1D [Also in Divisions G1 G2 and G5] A cold cathode comprises a conductive substrate, a film of solid organometallic compound electrochemically deposited and a conductive layer. Electron emission is produced by a potential of a few volts applied across the compound, e.g. from an integrated circuit. Emission is a function of the applied voltage but is independent of polarity. The substrate and layer are of Pt, Al, An, Ni, Cu or porous sintered Ni. The metal in the compound is Na, Li or Ca. The cathode is prepared by immersing the substrate on a metal salt dissolved in an organic solvent and applying a potential to the substrate to produce an electrochemical reduction reaction at its surface resulting in the deposition of the compound. The solvent is HMPT or tetrahydrofuran with Li perchlorate. The conductive layer is added by sputtering. The substrate may be planar or cylindrical with the layers on its inner or outer surface. The cathode is used in diodes, triodes, thyratrons, gas discharge lamps, display panels, proximity switches, TV screens, light amplifiers and liquid crystal panels (see Divisions G4-G6). The use of this cathode in a diode provides the triggering function of a triode since current is dependent on the applied potential. Further since the current is not dependent on the polarity of the applied potential a rectifying effect can be achieved. An additional grid (26) Fig. 2 (not shown) may be added. A lamp comprises the cathode and a phosphor layer in vacuum Fig. 5 (not shown) or in a gaseous atmosphere when a discharge occurs. The lamps may be used in display panels with crossed conductor arrays or arranged in a figure of eight. Alternatively the cathodes may form a figure of eight with a single anode. A light amplifier comprises a photoconductive layer 154 between electrodes 156, 152, the latter being connected to one electrode 2 of the cathode which emits electrons proportional to the light input to energize a phosphor layer. In another light amplifier the photoconductive layer and emissive material of the cathode form a sandwich separated by a single electrode. This may be scanned by an amplitude modulated light beam.
