Abstract

1465894 Deflecting liquid jets N HORWOOD 5 Feb 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 8399/73 Heading B2F [Also in Division B3] A jet of liquid 10 issuing from a nozzle 11 is deflected by a deflector 15 having a flat or substantially at face portion 30 or 31, bounded in part by a sharp edge 17 or 18, the deflector being moved by means 19 connected thereto from a position wherein the edge is clear of the jet to a position wherein the edge and adjacent face portion lie in the periphery of the jet so that the jet as a whole flows over the sharp edge and is deflected. The deflector 15 may comprise a plate having a rectangular aperture 16 the longer sides which are bevelled to provide edges 17, 18. The plate is connected to an electromechanical transducer 19 and reciprocated thereby under the control of a signal source to effect rapid periodic displacement of the jet. The plate may alternatively be reciprocated by piezo-electric, mechanical or manual means. The apparatus may be used in the working of a workpiece of ductile material e.g. copper sheet (Fig. 3 not shown), indentations being formed on the sheet in a pattern determined by movement of the jet and of the sheet.
