Abstract

1465290 Electrolytic capacitors SIEMENS AG 11 Oct 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 44092/74 Heading H1M In a method of manufacturing electrolytic capacitors, secondary formation is carried out in n successive stages by subjecting the capcitors individually to a forming voltage which increases in each stage, a constant current being employed in each stage of such magnitude that the forming voltage for that stage is reached in at most 20 seconds. The capacitor may comprise anode foil strips cut from an anodized sheet of valve metal, e.g. aluminium, wound into a roll with cathode foil and a paper separator impregnated with electrolyte. A constant current may be used throughout the secondary formation stages, the voltage difference between successive stages being made successively smaller. Alternatively constant voltage differences may be employed in which case either the constant current for each stage is adjusted or the formation time is increased, or the forming operation is carried out more than once per stage. Secondary formation is preferably carried out on unencased or unsealed capacitors. The capacitors may subsequently be aged at e.g. 85‹ C. for 0À5 to 2 hours at a voltage no greater than the maximum secondary formation voltage.
