The carbonyl compound may be a volatile compound of the formula M a R x (CO) y where M is V, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Co, Ni; a is 1-5; R is an organic ligand; x is 0-2; and y is 1 go 12. Alternatively the carbonyl compound may be a non-volatile compound of the formula where M is Ni, Co, Mn, Fe; L is a nitrogencontaining ligand; n is 2-6; m is 3 to 13; and q is 1 to 4, or of the formula QH 2 Fe 3 (CO) 11 where Q is ammonia, an ethanolamine, n-butylamine or trialkylamine. The compounds may be introduced in amount 0À02-0À2 wt. per cent and at 150-350‹ C.
