Abstract
1464795 Treating liquid effluents from nuclear fuel microsphere production AGIP NUCLEARE SpA 16 May 1974 [17 May 1973] 21900/74 Heading C1A A process for the treatment of liquid effluents produced during the production of nuclear fuel (e.g. ammonium uranate) microspheres which effluents include ammonium nitrate, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and a methylcellulose, comprises: (a) separating the nitrate ions on a strongly basic anion exchange resin to replace nitrate ions by hydroxyl, (b) distilling off ammonia from the effluents, (c) absorbing the distilled ammonia in washing water, which has been used to wash the microspheres, and (d) concentrating the methylcellulose and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The distillation of ammonia may be carried out before or after treatment with the anion exchange resin. The methylcellulose and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol may be concentrated by distillation of the water, and may be first separated on a suitable resin, e.g. a Sephadex (Registered Trade Mark) resin. This resin and the anion exchange resin may be used together in a mixed bed.
