Abstract

1464462 Concentrated Hevea latex FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 22 April 1974 17594/74 Heading C3E A process for producing concentrated latex from fresh Hevea rubber latex, which has an ammonia content of 0À10-0À50% by weight based on the latex and a soluble phosphate level adjusted to a level sufficient to precipitate any magnesium ions present in the latex comprises (A) adding to the rubber latex, preservative in an amount sufficient to inhibit deterioration of the latex by bacterial and enzymatic action for 36 up to 240 hours, and stabilizer in an amount sufficient to provide a mechanical stability (ASTM issue of DÀ1076) in the latex of 300 to 2000 seconds after ageing for 36 to 240 hours; (B) allowing said preserved and stabilized latex to age for 36 to 240 hours, with formation and settling of sludge in said latex; (C) concentrating the resulting sludge-free preserved and stabilized latex by centrifuging to a solids content of 50 to 70% by weight. The sludge may be removed from the preserved and stabilized latex by mechanical means (non-concentrating centrifugal step) during or after ageing, but before concentration. The concentrate may be additionally treated by adjusting the ammonia content to 0À15 to 0À25% by weight and adding further preservative. The substance used to preserve the latex before and/ or after concentration may be selected from formaldehyde; zinc oxide; ammonium pentachlorophenate; potassium pentachlorophenate; sodium pentachlorophenate; boric acid and the alkali metal and ammonium salts thereof; tetraalkali metal and tetra ammonium salts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid; sodium or zinc pyridinethione; zinc or alkali metal or ammonium diloweralkyl dithiocarbamates; zinc mercaptobenzothiazole; N -t - butyl - 2 - benzothiazole sulphenamide; and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate or mixtures thereof. The stabilizer is selected from ammonium or alkali metal soluble soaps of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids containing at least ten carbon atoms or an anionic or non-ionic surfactant. The stabilizer may be produced by adding free fatty acid (lauric acid is exemplified) to the latex, said acid reacting with free ammonia in the latex to give the -soap.
