Abstract

1464048 Treating Al or Al alloy prior to metal coating; electro-depositing copper, tin ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Oct 1975 [26 Nov 1974] 51157/74 Headings C7B and C7E Al or Al-based alloy is etched in aqueous NH 4 HF 2 of concentration 10-100 g/l, with or without a simultaneous or subsequent immersion in a conditioner consisting of a Ni salt and a Zn salt in aqueous acid, said aqueous NH 4 HF 2 either containing no other constituents, or, for simultaneous etching/conditioning, containing only the said conditioner ingredients in addition to the NH 4 HF 2 , rinsing said surface with water immediately after said treatment(s) or each of said treatments, and is coated with metal immediately after the last said rinsing step. The conditioner, used alone, may contain 1-200 g/1 NiCl 2 and 0À1-50 g/1 ZnCl 2 or ZnSO 4 plus NH 4 HF 2 ; used for simultaneous etching it also contains 25 ml/l HCl; immersion is for 5-15 sees. at room temperature. The treated Al may be coated with Sn by hotdipping in an ultrasonically agitated bath, or with Cu electrolytically followed by electrolytic or hotdipped Sn. Electrolytic Cu plating may be (1) at 55-60‹C and 20 mA/cm<SP>2</SP> for 1 minute in 94-119 g/l Cu pyrophosphate, 300-375 g/1, K 4 P 2 O 7 , 1-3 ml 0À88 NH 3 , at pH 8À6-8À9 to give a 0À6Á coating or (2) at 60-70‹C and 30mA/cm<SP>2</SP> for 1 minute in 55 g/1 Cu(CN) 2 , 67 g/l NaCN, 40 g/l Rochelle salt, 30 g/1 Na 2 CO 3 to give a 0À8Á coating, and Sn plating may be for 1 minute at 20 mA/cm<SP>2</SP> in a commercial bath containing 28-31 g/1 Sn, 112-138 g/l free H 2 SO 4 and 40 ml of an unspecified additive to give a 0À5Á coating. The process may be applied to continuous coating of Al wire, which passes through a succession of appropriate baths.
