Abstract
1462993 Exhaust filter; centrifugal separator BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 5 April 1974 [11 April 1973] 15146/74 Headings B1T and B2P An I.C. engine exhaust filter has concentric chambers into the first of which 4 exhaust gas enters from tangential inlet 2, passes blades 22 which centrifugally induce separation of heavier particles in far end of chamber 4, gas then passes into inner chamber 24 through openings 23 formed by "U" cuts in casing 7 and 8 being depressed and angled to reverse direction of the axial component of flow of gas. Flow then is filtered through fabric filter element 13 into support tube 14 and out to exhaust pipe 3 slidably gripped by filter end cover at 16. Differential expansion of outer casing 1 and casing 7 is allowed by sliding of parts at 18. Inner casing 7 is flattened at inlet opening 2 to allow free entry of gas (Fig. 2 not shown). The fibre fabric 13 may be a plurality of layers and be more pervious in the external layers.
