Abstract

1462881 Surgical drainage apparatus SHERWOOD MEDICAL INDUSTRIES INC 3 April 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 14899/74 Heading A5R In a surgical drainage device for draining fluid from the thoracic cavity comprising first and second separate hollow plastics members 8, 9 respectively each having an internal chamber 12, 14, and means for locking the members together, the fluid collection chamber 12 has an inlet 19 for the drainage fluid whereas the chamber 14 is partitioned by an integral wall 25 into channels 27, 28 interconnected at the lower ends thereof, the channel 27 being in fluid communication with the chamber 12 through integral connectors 22a, 26a and the channel 28 having a gas outlet 30. In use, the chamber 14 having a liquid seal at the lower ends of the channels is connected to a vacuum pump via 30 so that the drainage liquid is first received in a channel 12a and then overflows in succession into channels 12b and 12c, whereas the gases drawn from the cavity bubble through the liquid in the liquid seal chamber 14 to the gas outlet. A chamber 16 with an opening 43 to the atmosphere regulates the suction pressure at 30 and is provided with graduation markings (80) on a channel 42, whereas a chamber 18, identical in shape for the chamber 16, has graduation markings (85) on a channel 52 to indicate the pressure in the chamber 12, and provides an outlet for the gases drawn from the cavity through the liquid in case the vacuum pump fails closing the gas outlet 30. The drainage apparatus may comprise one, two, three or four plastics members Figs. 2, 4, and Figs. 5, 6, (not shown). In case of a one member device, the channel 12a is filled with a liquid up to a mark 89 and the gas outlet 22a is open to the atmosphere with the integral connector 50 being closed by a cap 88. The plastics members, which are transparent or translucent, have overlapping tabs 61, and pins 60, engaging the aligned holes 62 in the tabs, lock the members together.
