Abstract

1462857 Mercury cathode cell anode IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 April 1974 [16 May 1973] 23334/73 Heading C7B [Also in Division B2] An anode for a mercury cathode electrolytic cell comprises a support member of titanium or a suitable titanium alloy provided with an anodicallyconducting oxide coating and a porous outer layer of a chlorine-resistant organic polymer (particularly polyvinylidene fluoride or PTFE) and is prepared by firstly coating the anode with the oxidic coating and then either (a) applying to the oxide coating a mixture of the polymer and a solid particulate material, bonding the polymer to the oxide coating by drying, heating to melt the polymer and cooling, and subsequently removing the particulate material from the coating by dissolving in water or acid or by reaction in the electrolytic cell after the anode is put into service; or (b) coating the oxidic coating with a discontinuous layer of solid particulate material, coating with the polymer so as to fill the spaces between the particles, bonding the polymer to the oxide by heating to melt the polymer followed by cooling, and removing the particulate material as before. The oxidic coating may comprise an oxide of a platinum group metal together with an oxide of Ti, Ta, Zr, Nb or W, especially a mixture of RnO 2 and TiO 2 applied as a solution of RuCl 3 and tetrabutyl ortho-titanate followed by heating, and may be applied as a homogeneous mixture or by depositing alternate layers of the two oxides. The polymer may be applied by meltspraying, or by spraying or brushing as an emulsion followed by evaporation of the liquid vehicle. The particulate material may comprise potassium chloride crystals (provided by dipping the oxidecoated anode into saturated aqueous KCl solution followed by drying), starch, cellulose or calcium carbonate.
