Abstract

1462759 Torque wrenches and adaptors JAMES NEILL HOLDINGS Ltd 30 Aug 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 47210/73 Heading B3N A torque wrench, or, as shown in Figs. 1-3, an adaptor for converting an existing wrench or machine into a torque wrench, comprises an input drive member 10 and an output drive member 14, one of which, in this case member 10, defining a chamber 12 containing drive transmitting elements, balls 18, forced into drive transmitting engagement with a multifaceted head 17 on shaft 15 of member 14 by resilient means such as Belleville washers 19. The balls engage in the corners of the regular polygonal internal cross-section of the chamber which has as many corners as facets on head 17, see Fig. 2. Drive is transmitted until the reaction torque overcomes the spring loading. Fig. 3 shows a different arrangement and in Fig. 5 the spring loading is adjustable by screw-threaded pre-loading member 41 having a calibrated dial 42. In Fig. 5, the apparatus is a wrench turnable by handle 40 of suitable form.
