Abstract

1462725 Zinc electro-plating DR ING MAX SCHLOTTER 18 Sept 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 40739/74 Heading C7B An aqueous acid zinc plating bath contains a soluble Zn salt, one or more aromatic carbonyl brighteners and/or interface active agents together with a polymer of propylene oxide and/or a copolymer thereof with at most 25 wt per cent. of ethylene oxide. The bath may contain NH 4 or alkali metal salts e.g. Cl, SO 4 , BF4 or acetate. The propyleneoxide polymer may be of MW 300-1500 and the copolymer of MW 1000-5000 with an ethylene oxide content of 10-20%. Suitable aromatic carbonyl brighteners are Na benzoate blended with benzal acetone, methylnaphthyl ketone, benzophenone or 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde or, singly, benzalacetone or o-chlorobenzaldehyde. Compatible interface active agents may be used, of all types, to emulsify the polymer in the bath, e.g. Na decyl oxydiphenyl disulphate, Na ethylhexyl sulphate, a sulphatized C 16-18 fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide condensate, a napthalene sylphonic acid-formaldehyde condensate on its own or blended with C 12 H 25 CONH(CH 2 ) 3 N<SP>+</SP>(CH 3 ) 2 CH 2 COO<SP>-</SP>, or an ethyl sulphate quaternized oleylamine-ethylene oxide condensate or the last mentioned quaternized compound blended with an isononyl alcohol-ethylene oxide condensate. The bath may be agitated mechanically or with air and may be used at pH 3-6, at a temperature of 15-30‹C and a c.d. of up to 5A/dm<SP>2</SP>.
