1462680 Apparatus for processing crushed refuse A KACZMAREK 27 Nov 1974 51481/74 Heading B8C Apparatus 27 for processing refuse comprises a chamber 28 having an inlet, an outlet, a curved flow path for refuse therebetween, and a rotatable shaft 33 extending across the flow path the chamber 28 having a wall 52 in the region of the shaft 33 which is arcuate and leads tangentially to a lower surface 51 of the outlet, the lower surface being situated below the shaft 33, a plurality of identical compression plates 34 extending radially from said shaft in an angularly displaced relationship, each compression plate having two leading edges 67, 68 and two trailing edges 67, 68 each leading edge being smoothly curved and joining one respective trailing edge at an apex 71, 69, each plate 34 having a length longer than its width, and a plurality of stripper fingers 36 situated adjacent the outlet, one stripper finger being situated between a pair of compression plates in close proximity thereto. As shown, refuse, introduced into a funnel 19, falls into a knife box 14 which contains two counter-rotatable shafts 21, 22 which are reversible in case of overload, are driven by an electric motor 17 and gear-box 16, and carry co-operating crushing knives 23, 24 which deliver crushed refuse, at 26, into the inlet funnel 28 of the processing apparatus 27. The inlet funnel 28 is joined to an outlet shoot 29 which has the curved back wall 52 of quarter-cylindrical shape which corresponds with the circle 72 described by the apices 69, 71 of the plates 34 to form an annular passage below the refuse delivery at 26. The stripper fingers 36 are supported on the front wall 54 which has stiffening gussets 58 welded thereto. The plates 34, are preferably seventeen in number preferably having an angle difference of approximately 10 between plates. Reversal of the shaft 33 causes refuse to be scraped from the outlet shoot 29 into the inlet funnel 28 to relieve pressure in the outlet 46. The latter, which is from one third to one half of the cross-sectional area of the inlet funnel 28, is connected either to a long, high resistance, duct 37, Fig. 1, leading to a refuse container, not shown, or to a container 38, Fig. 3. The electric motor 17, and an electric motor 31, which drives the shaft 33 through reduction gearing, are preferably reversed at the same time.
