Abstract
1462607 Making propellers; working at specified temperatures PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND MARKET DEVELOPMENT CORP 27 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 3452/75 Headings B3A and B3V A marine propeller is made by casting a propeller blank, bringing the casting to a workable temperature, applying a required pitch to the blades, and cooling the propeller to room temperature. Thus different moulds are not required for different blade pitches. The casting may be brought to a workable temperature either by cooling directly after casting, or by cooling the casting to room temperature, storing the casting, and reheating it when required to room temperature. The material may be a zinc-aluminium alloy having a melting point about 810‹ F., casting taking place at 880‹ to 925‹ F. To apply the required pitch, the blank may be heated to 600‹ F. and struck with metal or neoprene pads, or heated to 780‹ to 800‹ F. and subjected to static pressure. The propeller is then machined or polished to obtain proper balance, anodized, and coated with an epoxy paint, and the balance checked.
