Abstract
1461912 Signalling over power lines ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 28 Oct 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 40325/73 Heading H4R One or more non-oscillatory loads 13 are switched in and out of shunt connection across power lines 11, 12 for at least one half-cycle at a rate or successively different rates less than power frequency in response to keying 20 according to encoded data for power line transmission. As shown, mains frequency is 90 degrees delayed, 16, then shaped, 17, and divided by two at 18 to produce a square wave signal at half mains frequency and with a 1 : 1 mark/ space ratio causing pulse generator 19 to fire a triac 14 allowing capacitor 13 to charge and discharge once during alternate mains cycles provided the key 20 is closed. The encoded data operates the key at a lower bit frequency than the trigger pulses. The signal so produced contains side-bands spaced at half mains frequency above and below mains frequency which are detected at a central receiver, e.g. for centralized meter reading. Different divisors in divider 18 and different mark/space ratios generate different side-band frequencies. In Fig. 2 (not shown), antiphase trigger pulses alternately shunt the capacitor 13 and an inductor (31) of equal reactance across the power lines. Alternatively, the divisors may be alternately two or four and the relative phases of the trigger pulses may be successively different for frequency and phase shift keying respectively. Knowing the nature of the transmitter keying, the receiver includes a current transformer (50, Figs. 5-8, not shown) feeding bandpass filters tuned to the expected sideband frequencies on either side of mains frequency which are threshold detected and added to produce a logic decision that the information received relates to transmitted data. Only one side-band need be detected if the S/N ratio is high. The received signal may alternatively be mixed with a lower frequency to extract the load switching rate directly. To detect phase shift keyed data, a reference phase signal is derived from the mains by 90 degrees delaying, shaping and dividing down to the load switching rate at the transmitter for comparison with the phases of the received sideband frequencies (Fig. 8, not shown).
