Abstract

1461839 Co-ordinate machines BENDIX CORP 7 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 20081/74 Heading G1M One carriage 10, Figs. 1,2, which moves along the Y axis is supported by wheels 18, 20, 22 running on a pair of boom members 12, 14 forming part of another carriage assembly 16 similarly supported for movement along the X axis. The carriage 10 supports a vertically movable probe 32 and is driven by a motor 50 through gears and a magnetic particle clutch 56 allowing pulse control of the drive. In order to decelerate the carriage a pair of magnetic particle brakes 62, 64 connected to gear trains are employed to brake rotary drive bearing wheels 20, 22. The wheels 20 and 22 run in grooved ways 42 which constrains the carriage 10 against movement in the X direction, but the wheel 18 runs on a flat surface 38 and the carriage 10 is maintained in engagement with the ways by spring mounted rollers 44. A grating 46 carried by the boom 14 co-operates with a reading head 48 carried by the carriage to produce a train of electrical pulses in the form of digital signals.
