Abstract
1461097 Sharpening cutters in situ WADKIN Ltd and P H MORRIS 6 June 1975 [6 June 1974] 25058/74 Heading B3D Apparatus for jointing, i.e. truing the rotary cutter 2 of a woodworking machine comprises a sharpening stone 6 mounted on a pivotable support 5 so as to be movable in an arc across the cutting circle of the cutter, means 9 for moving the stone in the arc, and means 7 for adjusting the arcuate path of the stone with respect to the cutter. A support bracket 1 is secured to the machine table and slidably support a frame 3 having a portion 4 which is vertically adjustable by a screw 7 and has a pivot 8 for the support 5. A shaft 10 is mounted in the portion 4 and has an eccentric stub 11 which is secured to a lever 9 and has a slide block 12 engaging a slideway 13 in an arm 14 of the support 5, a second stub at the other end of the shaft having a slide block engaging a slideway in a second arm of the support 5. The stone 6 is mounted at the end of the support 5 and moves in a small arc to true the cutter as the lever 9 is moved through 180 degrees. In another embodiment, the support is adjustable along a shaft mounted at its opposite ends in brackets on the machine table, one of the brackets being associated with a lever mechanism similar to that shown in Fig. 1 for causing the arcuate movement of the support and stone. The stone may be of circular cross-section and angularly indexable to present fresh portions to the cutter as the stone wears. The movement imparted to the support by the lever may be by means of reduction gearing or a cam.
