Abstract

1460820 Laminates PENNWALT CORP 3 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 14743/74 Heading B5W [Also in Division F2] A reinforced plastics laminate comprises a first lamina constituting an outer ply of the laminate, the lamina comprising a glass fibre fabric e.g. a woven fabric having bonded to one face thereof a tetrafluoroethylene polymer coating and to the other face a coating of a vinylidene fluoride polymer, the tetrafluoroethylene polymer extending in to the interstices of the fabric to a depth not greater than one half the thickness thereof, the first lamina being bonded in face to face relation with its vinylidene fluoride polymer coated face there towards with a second lamina comprising a flexible porous sheet e.g. of glass fibre fabric whose interstices are impregnated with the same or a different vinylidene fluoride polymer. The laminate may be made by (a) impregnating one surface of a glass fibre fabric with a tetrafluoroethylene polymer applied from a liquid carrier e.g. as an aqueous emulsion and to a depth not exceeding half the thickness of the fabric e.g. by spraying; (b) sintering the coating of tetrafluoroethylene polymer under pressure e.g. by heating in a press; (c) impregnating the other surface of the fabric e.g. by spraying, doctor knife application or by a continuous coating system with a vinylidene fluoride polymer applied from a liquid carrier e.g. as a dispersion; (d) heating the coated fabric to fuse the vinylidene fluoride polymer coating; (e) laying the coated fabric against a porous sheet impregnated with a vinylidene fluoride polymer with the vinylidene fluoride coated surface of the fabric directed theretowards; and (f) pressing the coated fabric and the impregnated sheet together to effect bonding therebetween. A vinylidene fluoride polymer is defined as being a homopolymer of vinylidene fluoride or a copolymer thereof with up to 50 mol. per cent of another monomer e.g. symdichlorodifluoroethylene, 1-chloro-1,2,2-trifluroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride or vinyl chloride. A tetrafluoroethylene polymer is defined as being a homopolymer of tetrafluoroethylene or a copolymer thereof with another monomer e.g. ethylene and/or hexafluoropropylene or a halogenated polyethylene referred to above. The preferred laminate shown comprises an outer layer of polytetraflouroethylene or of an ethylene/tetrafluoroethylene copolymer applied to one face of a layer 12 of glass fibre fabric and penetrating interstices of the fabric, a layer of polyvinylidene fluoride being bonded to the other face of the fabric to form a first composite layer (A), two further composite layers (B) of a glass fibre fabric 12 sandwiched between layers of polyvinylidene fluoride being bonded to the polyvinylidene fluoride layer of composite (A) and the assembly laminated to an optional substrate (C) e.g. of metal.
