Abstract

1460775 Moulding polyurethane DEMAG KUNSTSTOFFTECHNIK GmbH 31 May 1974 [19 June 1973] 24334/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A method of moulding articles from crosslinked polyurethane made from a plurality of components including polyol, an isocyanate, and a blowing agent, comprises bringing the polyol and the isocyanate to a constant temperature of between 30 and 45‹ C., introducing a gas, e.g. air, nitrogen, or ammonia, into the polyol and the isocyanate in a proportion of 10 to 20 volume per cent of gas related to the total volume of liquid, mixing the components by spraying into a mixing chamber at elevated pressure, and introducing the mixture into a mould which is at a constant temperature of between 55 and 70‹C. In the apparatus, Fig. 1, storage containers 1 and 2 respectively, polyol and isocyanate and have circulating heaters 9, gas is introduced in the container 1 by discharging the heater 9 into the gas space. Metering pumps 13 and 23 feed the materials to mixing heads 17. Further metering pumps 33, 43 feed a blowing agent and accelerator to mixers 22, where they are mixed with the isocyanate, and together with the polyol are sprayed under elevated pressure into the mixer 17, and subsequently charged into moulds 5. Feed pumps 12 are dispersed upstream of the pumps 13, 23. Gas can be fed directly into line 10 after the pump 12. The gas can be introduced into the isocyanate. The blowing agent and accelerator can be introduced into the polyol. Figs. 2 and 3, not shown, illustrate alternative ways of introducing gas into the line 10.
