Abstract
1460747 Electronic counters restoring after power failure WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 28 Dec 1973 [8 Jan 1973] 59996/73 Heading G4A [Also in Division H3] Each bi-stable stage of a counter (Figs. 1, 4, 5, not shown) includes an inductor L wound on a core whose magnetisation is dependent on the state of the stage prior to a power failure and which voices the reactance of the inductor L to charge a time constant of the stage and thus cause it to be reset to the same state on restoration of the power supply. The bi-stable stage is a master-slave bi-stable circuit using cross coupled NAND-gates 42, 44 and 34, 38. The inductor L is included in the feedback path of the master bi-stable. On restoration of supply the voltage across resistor R L increases either more quickly or more slowly than that across a capacitor C depending on the remanent magnetism in the core and therefore the reactance of L and thus causes the stage to settle into its original state. The specification describes a three stage reversible BCD counter using the stages and intended to be used to provide driving pulses for a magnetic mechanism controlling the position of the rods in a nuclear reactor. The inputs of the counter have delay circuits to prevent multiple counts when the counter is supplied by relay contacts subject to bounce. The counter is prevented from counting down below zero, to prevent false readings. A circuit (Fig. 9) is provided to ensure that the supply voltage is restored to the counter substantially instantaneously after it has built up following a failure.
