Abstract

1460587 Measuring weight electrically PA MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS Ltd 26 April 1974 [27 April 1973] 20145/73 Heading G1N A load cell forming part of a weighbridge comprising a beam 10 (Fig. 1), supported at each end by feet 11 and with a centrally raised portion 12 on the upper surface to which the test load W is applied, has resistance strain gauges G1-G4 mounted on the sides where the beam is subjected to minimum bending so that the gauges G1-G4 measure shear stress only. The cross-sectional area in this region is reduced by grooves 13. The strain gauges are connected as a Wheatstone bridge. Two such load cells are mounted in parallel on plates 22 (Fig. 3), inter-connected by tie bars 23 and covered with a load supporting sheet to form a weighing pad on which a vehicle wheel is located for weighing. Four weighing pads may be used to measure the load carried by the front and back wheels separately, and the outputs added electronically.
