1460461 Seaming non-metallic sheet material J W ELLEMOR 26 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 49911/73 Heading B5K Two preformed shapes are joined by bringing the shapes into close proximity, introducing adhesive into the gap between the shapes, and rotating the shapes to distribute the adhesive through the gap by centifugal force. Preferably, the shapes are hollow bodies each having a circular annulus in the region to be joined to form a sphere, an ovoid, a cylinder or an ellipsoid. The shapes may be made of plastics, metal, glass, wood, sand or stone material and specified adhesives contain a cyanoacrylate, a methyl cyanoacrylate or an isocyanoacrylate and set into a thin film between two surfaces. The adhesive may be applied to the shapes before or after the commencement of rotation thereof. Adhesive may be applied from a container positioned within the cavity formed by the shapes and which is actuated by rotation or a remote signal to spill or eject a predetermined amount of adhesive which is forced into the gap. In one Example, two hemispherical acrylic shapes are joined to form a sphere using a chemically catalysed acrylic cement. The edges to be joined are of equal diameter and are bevelled so that when the hemispheres are placed together an outwardly converging gap is formed. A band having a pressure sensitive adhesive thereon is placed around the outer periphery of the gap to hold the sphere together. A tube is passed through an aperture at the pole of one of the spheres to deliver a predetermined amount of cement into the gap. The assembled hemispheres are rotated to distribute the cement through the gap and the rotation is continued until the cement sets sufficiently to hold the hemispheres together. In another Example, collars are provided to apply axial force to the hemispheres at their poles to force them together.
