Abstract

1459763 Automatic control of speed MASSON SCOTT THRISSEL ENG Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [7 Feb 1973] 6126/73 Heading G3R In a system for controlling a driven continuous web and a nonlinearly driven cutter, a continuous integrator receives web speed and cutter speed signals and integrates their difference. The result is used to control one of the drives so as to maintain constant cut web lengths, as set e.g. by a variable impedance between one of the speed sensors and the integrator. As shown, motor 2 drives rotary knives 1 through non-linear link 4 to cut a web 5 e.g. paper into portions 6, the speed of motor 2 being controlled by comparator 14 according to the actual motor speed, from tachogenerator 10, and a desired speed obtained using a web speed signal from tachogenerator 13 via multiplier 17. The difference between the actual and desired motor speeds is also integrated at 12 to modify the speed control. The overall action of the system is to vary the speed of knives 1 in correspondence with the web speed, so that the cut portions 6 are of a fixed length, as determined by the gain of multiplier 17 i.e. by varying the input or feedback resistance of operational amplifier 18. In other embodiments, not shown, the web speed signal is obtained from a motor 9 driving the draw rolls 8, or this motor is controlled to a desired speed as derived from the sensed speed of motor 2.
