Abstract

1459470 Electromagnets GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 22 May 1975 [26 June 1974] 28260/74 Heading H1P A solenoid coil is wound from a composite strip 1 of insulant e.g. plastics material 2 on which spaced parallel strips 3, 4 of different widths of copper or aluminium foil are attached by adhesive or heat sealing, or the strips are formed by metal spraying (Fig. 2). The start end of the strip has a conductor 5 secured to both strips at 6, 7 e.g. by stacking, cold welding, soldering or conductive adhesive. Separate leads 8, 9 are conductively secured to the strips 3, 4 at the other end at 10, 11 (Figs. 3, 4). The strip is then wound on a former comprising a central tube 12 and end caps 14, 15 to form a double wound coil (Fig. 6), and the lead ends are secured to terminal sleeves of the end cap 14 (Fig. 5 not shown). The coils thus have different current capacities.
