Abstract

1459230 Moulding multicoloured plastics articles ALL DECOSTONE NV 31 Dec 1973 [26 April 1973] 60223/73 Heading B5A A method of producing a multicoloured decorative plastics article utilizes a moulding composition which comprises, in addition to an uncured thermosetting resin binding agent and filler materials, particles of a coloured polymer which is soluble at least in part in the binding agent; the moulding conditions are controlled to allow the polymer to dissolve to a predetermined degree to obtain the desired effect. The preferred binding agent/filler system is a fibre reinforced unsaturated polyester moulding compound, and in this case the polymer particles are preferably a styrene polymer or polyvinyl acetate. In these two examples, dissolution of the polymer particles occurs during a waiting period in which the mixture of polymer particles and moulding compound is allowed to stand before being compression moulded. Alternative resin systems are: a linear polyurethane particle in a polyurethane prepolymer, or polyvinyl alcohol particles in an epoxy resin prepolymer. The incorporated polymer particles may be granular, flaky, elongated or threadshaped of size 0À1-10 mm., and used in an amount 0À1-20% by weight based on the binding agent. To further enhance the decorative effect, a mineral filler (quartzite, mica, corundum) of grain size up to 3 mm. may be used, giving for example a natural stone appearance to the article.
