Abstract

1459175 Dewatering sludges by the freezethaw method UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 16 Jan 1974 [17 Oct 1972] 47863/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division F4] A process for the treatment of sludge by the freeze-thaw method comprises contacting a portion of a bulk of sludge directly with a solid refrigerated surface to form frozen sludge, removing the frozen sludge from the surface and feeding it to a thawing means and separating the liquid and solid components. In an apparatus which is described with reference to a Figure (not shown), the sludge is sprayed on to a rotating refrigerated cylinder, scraped off when frozen and the frozen sludge passed to a vessel where it is sprayed with warm liquid. The solids fall to the bottom of the vessel whence they are removed. The supernatant liquid is separated, a portion of the liquid being recycled to the spray via a refrigerant condenser wherein refrigerant vapours from the refrigerated cylinder give up heat on condensation, to the liquid.
