Abstract

1459159 Production of combustible gas from garbage NIPPON KOKAN KK 7 Jan 1975 [6 Feb 1974] 541/75 Heading C5E [Also in Division F4] Garbage is decomposed by heat in a number of successive stages each in a separate chamber, garbage 2 in the first chamber 1 being decomposed by heat, e.g. from an electrically operated plasma torch 3 to produce gas which passes via outlet 4 into a second chamber 5, where it is burned with oxygen from an inlet 7, the heat generated decomposing the garbage 6 to produce further gas which, in turn, is burned with oxygen in the third chamber 10 to decompose garbage 15. The gas generated in the third chamber leaves by an outlet 13 and is used as fuel for an electricity generating plant. Each chamber has a cover and means to withdraw slag. The oxygen is supplied in theoretically correct amounts. The heat source in the first chamber may alternatively be an arc or heating resistance. It is powered by the generating plant. The use of solar heat is also suggested. The oxygen comes from an air separator also powered by the generating plant.
