Abstract

1458644 Blackening metal surfaces MITCHELL BRADFORD CHEMICAL CO 9 June 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 24692/75 Heading C7U A dry dichromate free composition suitable for use in aqueous solution for blackening iron and steel including hardened steel and stainless steel contains in parts by weight 50-90 alkali metal hydroxide, 0À1-50 alkali metal nitrate, 0À1-50 alkali metal nitrite, 0À001-20 of a cyclic S containing compound selected from 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazyl disulphide and 2-mercaptoimidazoline, 0À001-20 of molybdic acid and/or alkali metal molybdate, 0-20 wetting agent and 0-20 of a metal salt of a sulphonated dye. The aqueous solution may contain 2-10 pounds per gallon of the composition and blackening is effected by immersion for 10-25 minutes in the solution at 255-325‹F. The blackened steel is rinsed in cold water and dried or dipped in oil or wax. A preferred wetting agent is alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate and the sulphonated dye salts may be the sodium salts of diphenyl-dis-azo-bis-8-amino-1-naphthal-3; 6-disulphonic acid; 8-anilino-5-(p-hydroxy anilino) -1-naphthalene sulphonic acid and sulphonated anthraquinone vat dyes.
