Abstract

1458536 Photographic process for making tanned colloid images EASTMAN KODAK CO 4 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 56198/73 Heading G2C A photographic material having an unhardened hydrophilic colloid layer and a layer containing an imagewise distribution of a catalytic metal, e.g. a developed silver image, is tanned imagewise by contact with a hexacoordinated trivalent cobalt cationic complex salt at a pH of at least 10, whereby the colloid layer is hardened imagewise by the direct reaction of the complex salt with said colloid in the presence of the catalytic metal image. The imagewise hardened image may be used directly as a lithographic printing plate or the lesser hardened areas may be washed off. The material containing an unhardened colloid layer and a silver image may be made by development of an exposed but unhardened silver halide material, which may contain an incorporated developing agent and the cobalt complex salt, to form a silver or silver plus dye image which may have a low silver coverage. Cobalt complex salts preferred are cobaltic hexammine chloride and acetate. The imagewise distribution of catalytic metal may be an image of gold, copper, iron, tin, mercury or palladium formed by exposure and development of suitable salts, or a metal image formed by physically developing photo-conductor materials e.g. of titanium dioxide.
