Abstract

1458418 Colouring with concentrates DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 29 May 1974 [3 Dec 1973] 23719/74 Addition to 1323086 Heading C3P [Also in Division C4] A binder-containing pigment preparation in flake or powder form with complete pigment dispersion is produced by preparing a pigment concentrate comprising a pigment completely dispersed in at least one binder, which is solid and non-plastic at room temperature, together with a solvent by subjecting an aqueous pigment mass to phase reversal by addition of the binder, the solvent and optionally a flushing acid, the relative proportions of pigment, binder and solvent being such that the minimum amount of binder and solvent is used which will allow flushing to take place so that, on completion of phase reversal, a pigment concentrate is obtained which, at room temperature, has a high intrinsic viscosity but is still plastic with cohesive forces outweighing adhesion forces, and which has a residual water content of from 0À8 to 7À2% by weight, based on the total weight of the pigment concentrate, and which pigment concentrate contains from 30 to 80% by weight, based on the total weight of the pigment concentrate, of the binder; drying the pigment concentrate to remove water and solvent substantially completely; and optionally pulverizing the dried pigment concentrate. In the examples pigment preparations comprising (1) ferrocyanide blue, oxyethylated tallow amine and maleate resin (2) postoxidized carbon black and a polyolefin and (3) ferrocyanide blue, benzylamine and natural asphalt are prepared using xylene and toluene as solvents. The preparations are incorporated into intaglio printing ink varnish in toluene and into molten polyolefin from which a film is produced.
