Abstract

1458223 Hose end fittings; Jointing tools GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 8 April 1974 [2 April 1973] 15624/73 Heading F2G A hose end fitting for a hose 1, e.g. a suction hose having a main body of elastomeric material la and incorporating a reinforcement comprising an annular elastomeric layer 4 bonded to and sandwiched between layers 2, 3 of high compression modulus yarn or fabric includes a ring 13 having a wedge shaped radial cross-section with the narrow edge of the wedge pointing axially and forced into layer 4 thereby forcing the outer surface of the end of hose 1 outwards and a flange 16 having an internally tapered hole which grips the outwardly forced outer surface of hose 1. The end fitting may include an annular gasket which covers the end surface of hose 1 and which may have a flange that extends inside the hose end, the gasket being keyed to ring 6. The end fitting may be used with hoses having alternative constructions in which a double layer of high compression modulus yarn or fabric is bonded to each side of layer 4 or the layers are helically wound or the layers are helically wound as strips and gaps are left between successive windings. The yarn or fabric of the reinforcement is or comprises polyester, polyamide, low twist steel wire cord or glass yarn, cotton yarn impregnated with phenol formaldehyde resin or aluminium. A cutting tool mounted on the hose end is used to provide a cut in elastomeric layer 4 for accommodating the wedge 13. The tool shown in Fig. 6 comprises a cylindrical internally screw threaded boss 17 secured at a position located somewhat inwardly of the end of hose 1; a collar 19 fitted into the free end of hose 1 leaving the opposed outer hose surface unsupported; a screw threaded shaft 20 which is screwed into boss 17 by means of handle and a radial arm 22 carrying a cutter 23 such that by screwing shaft 20 into boss 17 the cutting tip of cutter 23 engages and progressively penetrates into layer 4 of hose 1. In an alternative form shaft 20 one end of which is fixed to boss 17 has at its other end a rotating head (30) Fig. 9 (not shown) which carries an adjustable arm (31) at the outer end of which is a cutter (23) and a handle (28) for rotating the cutter.
