Abstract

Thioxanthone derivatives of the formula I, wherein Z<1> denotes a carboxyl, 5-tetrazolyl, 5-(1-alkyl)tetrazolyl or 5-(2-alkyl)tetrazolyl group, with the alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and being optionally substituted by a hydroxyl group or a basic or acidic group and Z<2> denotes hydrogen, halogen, an amino or nitro group, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an alkoxy, alkylthio, acyl or acylamino group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a 5-tetrazolyl, 5-(1-alkyl)tetrazolyl or 5-(2-alkyl)tetrazolyl group, with the alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and being optionally substituted by a hydroxyl group or a basic or acidic group, are active compounds and are obtained if appropriately substituted diphenyl sulphide derivatives, which in the 2-position possess a carboxyl group or a reactive functional derivative of such a group, are cyclised in the presence of Lewis acids or of protonic acids. The compounds are optionally converted to their salts or, if at least one of the substituents is a carboxyl group, to their esters or amides by esterification or amidation. The compounds act as inhibitors of certain allergic reactions in mammals. Several of the compounds of the formula I which have been prepared are novel. <IMAGE>
