Abstract

1457521 Centrifugal separators MESSERSCHMITT BOLKOW BLOHM GmbH 29 Nov 1973 55480/73 Heading B2P Suspended matter is centrifugally separated from a stream of gaseous or liquid medium by conducting the stream 22 Fig. 2, through a curved flow channel 10 which widens (as shown) and/or narrows funnel-wise (as seen in the direction of flow) and on the inner curved side of which the stream passes a trailing edge 11 so that part of it enters a toroidal or parttoroidal vortex chamber 12 and generates in the latter a vortex 21 which merges with the remainder of the stream, medium feed of suspended matter being extracted from the vortex and remaining medium and suspended matter being entrained by the said remainder of the stream where it merges with the vortex. The toroidal chamber 12 is divided into parttoroidal chambers adjacent one another and separated from one another by separating walls 15 which extend, as shown by their edges 17 and 18 extend into the flow channel and support the component 19 which is annularly recessed to form the toroidal chamber 12. A ring vortex 21 is generated in each parttoroidal chamber. The medium feed of suspended matter is removed from preferably along the curved longitudinal axis of the parttoroidal chambers via apertures 13 of suction conduits 14 whih extend through the walls 15 and from which the freed medium emerges in the direction of arrow 23. The remaining medium containing the separated matter is entrained by the main stream 22 in the direction of arrow 24. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the flow channel (25) widens and then narrows funnel-wise. In Fig. 4, the flow channel 34 has a number of toroidal chambers 35 arranged an series, the medium freed of suspended matter being extracted and conveyed through apertures. 37 and suction conduits 38 to an annular conduit 39 from which it emenges in the direction of arrow 41. Alternatively, the toroidal chambers may be provided with funnel-shaped widening or narrowing channels only.
