Abstract

1457517 Jointing ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 12 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 35808/73 Addition to 1415513 Headings B3U and B3V [Also in Division F2] A metal fitting having an enlarged head 12 is applied to a thermoplastics component 14 by directly heating the fitting by a heated tool and mechanically pressing at least a portion of the head 12 into the component 14 by means of the tool. The head 12 of a metal stud, which is provided with a planar shoulder 20 and a frustoconical shoulder 22 interrupted by axial grooves 24 is located against the surface of or in a recess 28 of the component 14, whereupon heat and pressure are applied by a tool to the shoulder 20 to cause the thermoplastics to soften and to flow through the grooves 24 and over the shoulder 22. The shoulder 20 of the inserted stud may be made flush with the surrounding surface of the component 14.
