Abstract

1457105 Cathode-ray tubes ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [1 June 1973] 26164/73 Heading HID An electron gun, e.g. for a storage tube or a pyroelectric vidicon, comprises a semiconductor cold cathode having a first diode 6 providing a finely focused electron beam and a further diode arrangement such as diodes 8 disposed symmetrically around the first diode at a constant radial distance therefrom and providing a relatively high current electron beam, the first and further diodes being independently energizable through respective metallic layers 7, 9. In a storage tube the fine electron beam is used for reading or writing and the high current beam for erasure or flooding the target. In a vidicon the high current beam is used to ionize residual gas with the further diodes held at a relatively positive potential to the first diode which is thus unimpeded in its normal operation and if the potential of the further diodes is arranged to be that of the image highlights at the target, then image spreading from the highlights is reduced.
